Kartemquin at 45

If you’ve ever bought a ticket to a fundraising gala, it’s more than just cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. For the savvy film director/producer, it’s money well-spent on networking with industry professionals.
You may have gone to IFP’s Independent Film Galas or the many Midwest Independent Film Festival after-parties, but Kartemquin offers something a little different on Thursday, September 15th: the 45th anniversary celebration of Kartemquin’s unmatched socially conscious documentaries.
From its first film, Home For Life in 1996 to Steve James’ highly acclaimed Hoop Dreams and The Interrupters (2011), which finished its run at Gene Siskel last week, Kartemquin has delivered nothing but ground-breaking films about otherwise untouchable issues. Kartemquin’s emboldened filmmakers often get unprecedented access into the lives of many Chicago and Midwest, and international subjects whose stories strike resounding connection with the national consciousness.
Special appearances and sneak preview screenings are scheduled including radio champion of the arts Alison Cuddy, Host of WBEZ’s Eight Forty-Eight, Author Alex Kotlowitz, Co-Producer of The Interrupters and author of the book that inspired the film, There Are No Children Here, Lil Mikey from The Interrupters and Tio Hardiman, Director of CeaseFire Illinois will all be engaging supporters who attend the event to offer their continued support of Kartemquin Films. Filmmaker, Artistic Director, and Co-Founder of Kartemquin, Gordon Quinn, will also be in attendance. His award-winning, PBS-broadcast film, Prisoner of Her Past, is described as “the first film to investigate Late-Onset Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorders.”
Purchase tickets at one of six donation levels, including Non-Profit/ Student passes. Each has a varied level of access to the Metro (3730 North Clark Street), Kartemquin’s venue partner. Listen to the acoustic arrangements of Mar Caribe, a Spaghetti-Western style band who does a rendition of the movie theme from Fellini’s 8 1/2 and will be performing that night.
The short list of contributions from private donors includes the Park Hyatt Chicago, The Art Institute of Chicago, Blackbird Restaurant, The Lookinglass Theater, and the Post Family.
